Ear wax (also known as cerumen), is a natural secretion of the healthy ear canal. Ear wax has a very important role in the ear and acts as a protective barrier to trap dust, microorganisms and other foreign particles which can impact your ear and affect your ear health and hearing. Ear wax also keeps the ear canal lubricated and prevents it from becoming too dry. It also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that help prevent infections of the outer ear. Finally, ear wax is hydrophobic which means it repels water and helps to keep the ear dry after a shower or swim! Normally, ear wax migrates naturally out of the ear canal on its own due to movements of the tiny hairs in the canal as well as jaw movements such as chewing and talking. In some cases, this self-cleaning mechanism of the ear may not work properly and ear wax can build up and cause problems.
